#59 Culture | The Daily Doodle

Soft butter only please

Today’s doodle is about culture.

America is a cultural petri dish. We're steeped in traditions, from spades tournaments to the feast of the seven fishes.

Now, there's a kitchen staple that serves as a true cultural barometer, with zero grey areas: What do you do with your butter? Not margarine, but good old butter.

Growing up, butter lived on the kitchen counter, soft and ready to spread across some freshly toasted bread. But, my partner comes from a cold butter household that takes it out when necessary. Which doesn’t make sense to me because who spreads cold butter on warm toast? 👀

Our culinary debates rival those of baked mac and cheese versus creamy and the similar question: Do collard greens have bacon in them or not? It's an age-old debate that we've yet to fully hash out.

Comment (or reply) your experience:

So, chime in and let me know: is your butter in the fridge or on the counter?
